Kimberly Clark Housing Project

In India, a significant number of informal waste collectors reside in slums or squatter settlements that are often underserved, and lacking basic infrastructure and adequate housing. These resilient individuals play a crucial unrecognized role in the waste management system, contributing to the circular economy. One such inspiring story is that of Jayakar, who, despite growing up in adverse conditions and forgoing most of his schooling, has become a dependable figure in his local community. He currently supports a household of eight individuals and serves as a role model in his society.

Jayakar's journey reflects the challenges faced by India's waste collector community. Born into this community, he was compelled to start working at a very young age due to financial constraints, limiting his access to education. These unsung heroes, despite their invaluable contributions to waste management and recycling, often live in substandard conditions and remain unprotected.

Recognizing the plight of India's waste collector community, 'Project Ghar' was conceived with a mission to provide decent housing and improved living conditions to these individuals and their families. This initiative aims to uplift and empower a community that has tirelessly served as the true environmentalist.

Project Ghar  is working towards building sustainable housing units for vulnerable families, enabling them to live better, healthier and also financially stable lives.

Project Ghar' commenced with Jayakar's house being the first to receive transformation. The impact on his life and the community has been profound:

  • Enhanced Living Conditions: Jayakar's family now enjoys a safe and comfortable home, shielding them from harsh weather and health hazards.

  • Increased Opportunities: With better living conditions, Jayakar's children can access education and vocational training to enable them to break the cycle of poverty.

  • Empowerment: Jayakar has become a local symbol of hope, motivating others to aspire for a better future.
