This diagram shows the journey of plastic through the supply chain.

Who recycled your plastic waste?

In most developing countries the informal sector is responsible for 80-90 percent of recycling activities. In fact, 1% of the urban population in developing countries rely on informal recycling as their primary household income. The traditional informal recycling supply chain in developing countries is a very exploitative system. The wastepickers at the base of the supply chain face numerous challenges when accessing fair and consistent prices for the discarded plastics they collect. Wastepickers often have multiple barriers to formal employment so when they are unable to make a living from recycling there is no other safety net to sustain their families.

Plastics for Change is empowering the informal recycling economy with mobile technology. Our mobile platform benefits all members of the supply chain and ensues that those at the base receive fair and consistent prices for the discarded plastics they collect. This approach is accelerating the developing of recycling infrastructure in low income communities by creating markets for the plastic waste and creating livelihoods for the people picking up the discarded plastic. Help us reduce plastic pollution through this human-centric approach.

Create an IMPACT

Our crowdfunding campaign received contributions form 28 different countries to support our global cause. With these funds we've developed and implemented the world's first ethical sourcing platform for the informal recycling economy.

A contribution will help us scale the ethical sourcing platform and provide additional wastepickers with fair prices for the discarded plastics they collect.  Together we can create sustainable livelihoods, fight climate change and address the root cause of plastic pollution in developing countries.
